My child cannot function optimally in a mask at school. Her sensory system is easily overwhelmed and she is also prone to fainting spells. Since being granted a mask exemption in September, we noticed a marked improvement in her learning, attention span, attitude towards school, and general outlook. Unfortunately, the school has now revoked the exemption and demanded a medical note for her to continue without a mask. As her advocates in terms of health, mental health and rights, we the parents feel that this is overreach and unconstitutional. Because we refuse to comply with this demand, we have had to withdraw our daughter from the school and search for alternative learning options. We found a learning pod in our community where like-minded families collaborate to teach their kids in an unmasked environment, but the rest of the community finds this to be an outrage and the local newspapers have taken it upon themselves to defame us, shame us, and make every effort to shut down the pod. This is so incredibly damaging to our children and our families – freedom of choice is so critical and is our right under the Canadian Charter. If we don’t correct these dark and divisive behaviours in society soon, I fear this country is doomed to an apartheid-like state.
